Paul's Peace: Conflict Resolution and the Music of Paul McCartney (השלום של פול: יישוב סכסוכים והמוסיקה של פול מקרטני)

<b>English Abstract:</b> In today's world, there is a dire need to engage more nations and communities, especially those that are tradition-oriented, in peacemaking. To achieve that end both tools and inspiration must be provided. Conflict resolution methodologies provide the tools, but for inspiration we need good narratives of peacemaking and appealing protagonists. And so we need to keep the prevailing global peacemaking narrative inclusive and appealing to all. We can also look for good peace narratives within these nations' and communities' cultures. This essay focuses on the former. One of the salient motifs in the global – or at least western – narrative of peacemaking is the 1960s and 1970s counter culture scene. However, while inspiring many to seek peace, its defiant character paradoxically collides with its central message of "peace and harmony." Moreover, its anti-establishment posture excludes many from this quest for peace and harmony. For example, many, so many, peace seekers and humanists who also regard their nationality or religion as central to their identity can't find a place in this story. This essay is an attempt to highlight elements in the sixties narrative that can deliver a more coherent message of peace, and to a larger audience. The essay focuses on Sir Paul McCartney, who projects, not the adversarial or defiant version of the counter culture, but rather a coherent message of "peace, love and music" and whose attitude towards traditional establishments such as religion and nationality is more accepting.
