תקציר בעברית:ישנה הסכמה גורפת בקרב מדענים בעולם כי ההתחממות העולמית מהווה איום חמור על חייהן ועל רווחתן של אוכלוסיות רבות בעולם, וכי ההתמודדות עִמה היא אחד מהאתגרים הגדולים שידעה האנושות. עם זאת, מתוך מחקרים וסקרים עולה כי תושבי מדינות רבות ברחבי העולם אינם נזעקים להגיב במידה המתבקשת על איום בסדר גודל כזה, ואינם פועלים די הצורך לצמצומו. אחד הגורמים המשפיעים על התגובה לאיומים הוא האופן שבו הם נתפסים. על כן, יש חשיבות רבה להבנת המאפיינים של איום זה, שעשויים להסביר את הערכת החסר של חומרתו.זהו מאמר סקירה, המתאר את ספרות המחקר העדכנית המתייחסת להיבטים הפסיכולוגיים של תפיסת חומרת האיום הנוגע להתחממות העולמית. המאמר בוחן היבטים אלה בעין הפסיכולוגיה החברתית, הפסיכולוגיה האבולוציונית, הפסיכולוגיה של קבלת החלטות והפסיכולוגיה של ניתוח סיכונים.מהסקירה עולה, כי מבחינה פסיכולוגית קשה לאדם לתפוס את האיום כחמור בגלל מקבץ מאפיינים המתקיימים בתהליך של ההתחממות העולמית, וזאת יותר מבכל סוג אחר של איום, כגון: היותו תהליך חסר תקדים, לא מוחשי, מלווה באי-ודאות, נוגע למספר גדול של אנשים במקומות רבים ומרוחקים, מתפתח בהדרגתיות ועוד. העלאת המודעות לחסמים הפסיכולוגיים בתפיסת חומרת האיום הטמון בהתחממות העולמית היא נדבך חשוב והכרחי לבניית התמודדות עם משבר האקלים העולמי.English Abstract:There is widespread consensus among scientists that global warming (GW) presents a serious threat to the lives and wellbeing of many populations around the world, and that addressing this problem is one of the greatest challenges humankind has ever faced. However, research has shown that in many countries people are not responding in a manner consistent with a threat of such proportions or taking adequate action to reduce the threat. One factor that affects the reaction to threats is the way in which they are perceived. Therefore, it is important to understand which characteristics of GW might explain the underestimation of its severity.The article presents a review of recent literature on the psychological barriers of GW threat perceptions. These barriers will be examined through the prisms of social psychology, evolutionary psychology, psychology of decision making, and the psychology of risk analysis.The review indicated that it is psychologically difficult for people to perceive this threat as a serious one because of several characteristics that are associated more with global warming than with any other threat. Among these, for example, are the gradual, unprecedented, and intangible nature of the process, the uncertainty surrounding it, and its impact on a large number of people in numerous places that are distant from one other.
